Ultimate Cybersecurity Careers Guide
A downloadable book
This is the first full self published book by Kim Crawley.
My previous books have been published commercially by Wiley, O'Reilly, and Packt.
But for legal reasons, I will only sell my self published books on Itch.io.
Ultimate Cybersecurity Careers Guide is also available through most eBook retailers
except for Apple Books, and as a paperback exclusively through Amazon.
I teach enterprise cybersecurity at the Open Institute of Technology (OPIT),
and all of my students are people who are planning to enter the cybersecurity
field or switch from one type of cybersecurity role to another.
It's really tough to enter the industry!
It's so much more difficult now than it was 20 years ago.
I decided to use my experience navigating the industry and helping my students to make this book available to anyone who is curious about the cybersecurity field.
As our lives are more and more dependent on computers and computer networks,
cybersecurity jobs are more important than ever. Cybersecurity isn't just one kind
of job. There are lots of very different cybersecurity roles. Some of the more common ones include security architects, security
engineers, secure software developers, penetration testers, SOC analysts,
other security analysts, CISOs, and GRC specialists.
Depending on your role, you could be simulating cyber attacks, defending computer networks, writing and enforcing company policies,
developing security patches, training employees, or fetching coffee and donuts for your overworked colleagues in the security operations center (SOC). Different roles suit different people
better.
Entering the industry can be confusing and frustrating because a job role with the same title in one company can be different from a job with the same title in a different company.
There are hundreds of cybersecurity certifications, and it's very difficult to figure out which ones are worth pursing. Don't waste your time and money on certs that won't get you
the job. Also, applying to job postings on LinkedIn, Indeed, or elsewhere in the
2020s can be a frustrating waste of time.
My book features full explanations of every important cybersecurity certification,
I recommend college programs (some of which are remote and relatively inexpensive), how to socially network your way into a job because
you will probably get that interview based on getting to know people, and ways to
get precious pre-employment experience, such as Capture The Flag events and bug bounty programs.
